Consumer watch: Directory Enquiry fees

Directory Enquiry posterizeAccording to a recent report from the Consumers’ Association of Ireland, consumers are continuing to pay dearly for phoning directory enquiries. Some of the figures are quite high – according to the CAI’s figures, a ten minute call to 11850 costs €30.69 from a landline, €16.39 from Vodafone prepay and €23.52 from 3 prepay.

The CAI also note the lack of advertising or promotion around 11888, 11850’s low call number, and suggest it as a viable alternative, with a 10 cents set-up fee, and 50c per minute.

Money Guide Ireland offers some handy tips for minimising charges, such as writing down the number they give you and phoning it yourself, rather than incurring possible connection charges.

Cheapest of all are undoubtedly the online resources – for business numbers try goldenpages.ie, while Eircom offers an online residential and business directory.
