Are you due to renew your home insurance? Then there are a number of things you should take into consideration before simply renewing with the same company you’ve had for the last year.

According to Consumerhelp.ie, you should shop around before you take out new home insurance. Compare companies and plans, and don’t be afraid to let providers know you’re comparing – your current provider may be willing to drop their premium when faced with a lower figure from one of their competitors. In their home insurance comparison survey carried out last July, Consumer Help found that the average saving when shopping around was €264.

They also advise consumers to check out the excess when getting a quote, the amount you must pay on any claims you make before your insurer pays the balance. For example, if your excess is €300 and your total claim is €700, you pay €300 while the insurer pays €400.
