Ireland’s Guide To Money And Living

Consumer watch

Consumer watch AmbroWould you like to save €5,000 per year? Who wouldn’t! Pricewatch from the The Irish Times is running a series of seven pieces over seven Mondays, offerings ways in which consumers can save on groceries, transport, insurance, holidays and much more.

The first instalment covered grocery savings. It might be common sense advice, but it covers things we often overlook, like making weekly meal plans (and sticking to them), cooking a bit less and avoiding wasteful leftovers, opting for more more own brand options, and cooking from scratch rather than paying more for convenience.

In other news, the Competition Authority and the Consumer Protection Commission have merged forces, forming the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. This will be the sole statutory body responsible for enforcing consumer protection and competition law in Ireland. Some of their increased powers will include prohibition notices, on-the-spot fines (in cases of misleading or incorrect price displays), notices of compliance and naming-and-shaming. The new body will have a particular focus on misleading practices, such as false, misleading or deceptive marketing or advertising.
